More About Intervention

                             Intervention Explained

You may be considering an intervention but you have no clue what it is, how it works or if it will truly help the person you love.

It is painful to love someone who is lost in an addiction.  You may have tried to help many times only to watch the situation continue to spiral out of control.  You become overwhelmed, exhausted emotionally, physically and spiritually and you may have lost hope that things will ever get better.

An intervention is an opportunity for change, not only for the person struggling, but for all the family and those that are concerned.   An intervention is a healing process for everyone.

The pre-intervention meeting is for the family. This is where loved ones begin to clearly make sense of the insanity that is addiction.  A learning process of changing behaviors from unhealthy ways that don’t work and begin to learn how to make changes that will motivate the addict instead of enabling the downward spiral of chemical dependency.

Many times the “help” that family and friends offer is actually the enabling kind and serves only to prolong the insanity. Loved ones may be unknowingly contributing to the addicts’ destruction. With an Intervention you stop caretaking “the addict” and begin to show how much you care about them getting healthy. The driving force behind an Intervention is love and concern for the addict.

An intervention is a power shift… shifting the focus away from the addict’s lies, manipulations and demands to what the family and loved ones want.  You will learn to get off of that rollercoaster of your loved one’s addiction by making new healthy decisions and setting clear boundaries about what behavior is acceptable and what is not.  You are no longer enabling!  Intervention removes the power from the addict and transfers it to you.

During the formal intervention (meeting with the addicted person present) the truth of the addiction is presented to the addict in such a manner that it opens their eyes to the problem; the destructive impact it has had on their own life and how it is affecting those who love them is evident to all.

The intervention process brings all participants together in unity and clear communication.  Intervention isn’t about anger, resentment or a desire to punish and hurt. These have NO place in the intervention process. Intervention provides motivation for change; however it doesn’t use intimidation, manipulation or humiliation… we know that simply does not work.  Consequences are part of the solution. Those and other motivators are combined with love… making an intervention a great launching pad for change.

Intervention provides an opportunity for you and your loved ones to come together in love to expose the lies you all have been living under and do it bathed in love and truth.
